Our Story
The Journey Behind Crashybara

Derek Slabosz, Founder
After moving to California in 2015, I started working in accident reconstruction. Searching for crash tests always seemed like the most inefficient part of my job, but it was a necessary task. After purchasing my first home server, I started becoming interested in software automation. I started deploying code I found on GitHub to build a self-hosted version of Netflix that I could share with close friends and family.
In 2021, I came up with the idea for Crashybara, a modern interface to search for NHSTA crash tests and export the information quickly to a PowerPoint format.
The name Crashybara is a play on words from the world’s largest rodent, the capybara. They seem to be able to make friends with everyone, and I really love their carefree and relaxed demeanor. In 2025, Crashybara was launched with the goal of reducing time waste when searching for crash tests.
Outside of building software applications, my favorite hobbies are riding bicycles, surfing, and hiking. My favorite place in the world to visit is Mammoth Lakes, California (pictured).
